Problem

Despite government schemes, services, and laws to improve the health and education status girls, poor health and educational outcomes still persist especially among adolescent girls form vulnerable pockets of Raichur and Yadgir districts due to the following underlying barriers that hamper the wellbeing of girls in the region: Low value for education of the girl child among families and lack of their support creates low aspiration among girls for continuation in school. New reports on the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic are further showing an increase in the number of child marriages and girls drop out from education as a result of the pandemic Further, the lack of adequate self-esteem, agency and life skills is also making girls vulnerable to mental health related issues and GBV aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic Existing gender norms leads to boys devaluing girls’ importance in the community. This is further increasing under the conditions of the pandemic as families struggle to cope with the economic burden, and thus prefer getting their girls married off. Lack of awareness on health and hygiene along with discriminatory upbringing deprives girls of adequate nutrition, health care and hygiene. Lack of access to adequate SRH and nutrition related resources as a result of the pandemic further decreases girls’ well-being.

Objective

Increase secondary school completion rates among adolescent girl role models and among peer girls. Reduce the proportion married among adolescent girl role models and peer girls. Increasing nutrition levels among role model girls and peer adolescent girls.
